Kiiraay: A new political movement for the president

Hundreds of supporters gathered in Dakar for the unveiling of Kiiraay, a name that translates to ‘protection’ or ‘shield’ in Wolof. Positioned as the party of ‘Republican Patriots’, this formation emphasizes core values such as national integrity, ethical governance, transparency, solidarity, and diligence. President Faye declared his ambition for Kiiraay to emerge as the dominant political force in the country. Already, numerous elected officials and political figures have transitioned from the Pastef to join the presidential camp.

The end of a political partnership

The launch of Kiiraay brings months of escalating tensions between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko to a close. After appointing Sonko as Prime Minister upon assuming office, the president dismissed him in May due to deepening political and economic disagreements. Though removed from government, Sonko remains Speaker of the National Assembly and continues to lead the Pastef, which maintains a significant parliamentary majority.

Today in Dakar, we founded Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains. Kiiraay, in the Wolof language, means what protects.

This party was born to serve the Republic, the home that shelters all citizens, and it is open to all Republicans.

The emergence of Kiiraay ushers in a new chapter for Senegalese politics. The party is expected to hold its inaugural congress following the rainy season, while the rivalry between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko is poised to define the next phase of political realignment in the country.
