Sonko’s firm stand against postponement of 2027 local elections

Senegalese political leader Ousmane Sonko has firmly rejected any suggestion of delaying the upcoming local elections scheduled for January 2027. Speaking from a position of unwavering conviction, he emphasized that postponement would be an unacceptable breach of democratic principles, particularly in light of the sacrifices already made to prevent such a scenario.

During a recent address, Ousmane Sonko drew a clear distinction between the legislative elections of 2024 and the upcoming local polls. The 2024 elections, he noted, followed an extraordinary constitutional dissolution of the National Assembly, whereas the 2027 local elections are part of Senegal’s regular electoral calendar. « These elections must proceed as planned in January 2027, » he declared. « We will not tolerate claims of unpreparedness from any quarter. When election day arrives, the people will cast their ballots. »

Sonko, who also serves as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, stressed that the legal framework for these elections is already in place. « The electoral roll revision should already be underway, » he pointed out. « We have fought too hard—some have paid the ultimate price—to prevent election postponements. We cannot now allow maneuvers that would once again delay the process. »

In a confident tone, Sonko highlighted the ongoing voter registration drive as a telling indicator of his party’s electoral prospects. « The sale of voter cards already provides a clear picture of our future performance, » he asserted. « These operations serve as an early barometer of our political strength. » His remarks underscore the PASTEF party’s confidence in its grassroots support ahead of the crucial vote.
