Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé traveled to Kampala on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, for an official visit to Uganda. The Togolese leader participated in the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni, who was re-elected in the general election held on January 15 of the same year.
The event, themed « Safeguarding progress and advancing toward an upper-middle-income country status », brought together numerous African heads of state alongside delegations from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Diplomatic exchanges and regional security discussions
During the visit, Faure Gnassingbé extended his congratulations to Museveni and expressed his wishes for success in the latter’s new term. In response, the Ugandan president praised Gnassingbé’s presence, highlighting it as a testament to the strong cooperation ties between Lomé and Kampala.
The discussions also addressed security challenges in the Great Lakes region. As the African Union mediator for the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, President Gnassingbé reaffirmed his commitment to continuing consultations with regional stakeholders to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict.
The Ugandan leader, in turn, commended Togolese diplomacy for its commitment to dialogue and peaceful solutions, underscoring the role of Togo in fostering African peacebuilding and regional integration efforts.
