Uk steps up ebola fight in eastern drc with $26m commitment

The escalating Ebola outbreak in the eastern provinces of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—stretching across North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri—threatens to worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis. This stark warning was delivered by Jennifer MacNaughtan, the British Minister Counsellor, during a United Nations Security Council briefing focused on the DRC’s ongoing challenges.

The British diplomat acknowledged the swift response of Congolese authorities and the critical role played by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) in facilitating the delivery of essential supplies to affected communities. The United Kingdom has also reaffirmed its financial commitment to combating the outbreak.

“We commend the Democratic Republic of Congo’s rapid response and the efforts of MONUSCO to ensure essential supplies reach affected areas. The United Kingdom has pledged up to $26 million to support the fight against Ebola,” MacNaughtan declared on June 26.

She emphasized that London is collaborating closely with Congolese authorities, international partners—including the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC—as well as regional governments to strengthen coordination in outbreak response, epidemiological surveillance, containment measures, and preparedness.

Conflict Complicates Humanitarian Access

In the eastern DRC, the Ebola outbreak persists amid ongoing hostilities between local and foreign armed groups, including the M23 rebel faction—allegedly backed by Rwanda—and government forces. Despite the health crisis, violence continues to displace communities and disrupt vital services.

The United Kingdom has issued an urgent appeal to all conflict parties, demanding unhindered humanitarian access to populations in need, in strict adherence to international law. “We urge all parties to guarantee full, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access to enable this critical public health response,” MacNaughtan stressed.

Health Systems Under Strain

Eastern DRC is grappling with the dual burden of armed conflict and a resurgent Ebola epidemic, which has already claimed numerous lives. Disruptions to daily life—including restricted access to markets, livelihoods, and essential services—are exacerbating vulnerabilities. Healthcare systems remain severely strained, struggling to mount an effective response.

Humanitarian organizations emphasize that a robust response requires secure access to affected communities, strengthened surveillance at formal and informal border crossings, and the dissemination of accurate public health information. Insecurity and attacks on healthcare workers have further hampered outbreak control efforts, including case detection and contact tracing.

DRC Authorities Remain Resolute

Despite the challenges, Congolese authorities have dismissed alarmist narratives, highlighting their ongoing collaboration with national and international partners to contain the virus. The DRC has prior experience managing health emergencies, having successfully contained sixteen previous Ebola outbreaks through coordinated response operations.
