Midday on Thursday, August 20, President Paul Biya, accompanied by his wife Chantal, touched down aboard a private Boeing jet registered P4-CLA. The aircraft departed from Geneva, with touchdown in Yaoundé expected before evening.

The ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC) has mobilized its base, preparing a rousing welcome for the returning head of state. Authorities have also orchestrated a carefully staged spectacle around the president’s return.

The state broadcaster CRTV has deployed nearly 200 journalists and technicians to cover the event live across radio and television. Every moment—from the aircraft’s landing to the 22-kilometer motorcade journey to the presidential palace—will be broadcast and narrated in real time.

Longest absence in office

This unannounced return follows 74 days abroad—the longest absence of President Biya’s tenure. During his absence, speculation about his health dominated public discourse, with some claiming he underwent knee surgery while others suggested routine medical consultations.

Cameroonians are eager to learn whether the president used this extended period to advance key initiatives, including the formation of a new government—announced eight months ago but still pending. They also seek clarity on who will fill the vice-presidential position, created in April but yet to be filled.
