Aldiouma Sow, a key advisor to Senegal’s President and coordinator of the government’s political, civil society, and trade union wing, has publicly rebuked Ousmane Sonko, the opposition leader who became prime minister after winning the country’s presidential election last year.
Sonko had been facing intense criticism from both within his own party and across the political spectrum for his handling of various crises, including the recent COVID-19 outbreak in Senegal. In an exclusive interview with our newspaper, Sow laid bare Sonko’s alleged shortcomings, accusing him of ‘betraying’ the people who trusted him.
‘It was a very difficult situation,’ Sow said in the interview. ‘We thought Ousmane Sonko was going to help us fight against his opponents, but once he got into power, we realized that our initial expectations were wrong.’
He added: ‘Ousmane Sonko has deceived many people who trusted him and gave him their support. He has shown himself to be selfish and only interested in serving the interests of a small group of people.
This shocking revelation comes at a time when Sonko’s government is facing mounting pressure from opposition groups, civil society organizations, and even some within his own party. The opposition leader had been under intense scrutiny for months over various issues, including the recent COVID-19 outbreak in Senegal.
