Bénin deputies reform mediator role, assign duties to CES vice-president

During a plenary session at the Palais des Gouverneurs, deputies of the 10th legislature reviewed and adopted a bill amending the law on the Mediator of the Republic (law n°2009-22 of 3 January 2014).

This legislative reform eliminates the separate appointment to the post of Mediator of the Republic, streamlining the functioning of state institutions.

From now on, the duties of this conciliation body will automatically fall to the first vice-president of the Economic and Social Council (CES). Given the current composition of the CES, this heavy responsibility goes directly to Razacki Amouda Issifou.

He will therefore combine his prerogatives as first vice-president of the advisory body with his new missions as Mediator of the Republic.

The new Mediator of the Republic takes on this role with the profile of an experienced jurist and a particularly dense experience at the top of the state. Razacki Amouda Issifou has indeed left his mark on Bénin’s public life by successively serving as vice-president and then president of the Constitutional Court.

His career also took him to the National Assembly, where he chaired the prestigious Law Commission. Former secretary general of the very first autonomous national electoral commission (CENA) in 1996, he also served as mayor between 2010 and 2015, after holding several strategic leadership positions within the Ministry of Justice.

His deep knowledge of administrative and constitutional mechanisms stands out as a major asset to lead this new formula of the Mediator of the Republic.
