Benin makes history with first female presidential aide de camp

The Bénin’s security apparatus has just witnessed a groundbreaking milestone. A seasoned officer from the Garde républicaine, a captain, has been appointed as the first woman ever to serve as an aide de camp to a Head of State in the country’s modern history—and, notably, across West Africa.

Her prominent placement during the inaugural ministerial council of the seven-year term on May 28, 2026 underscored a clear departure from long-standing traditions, where such a role was almost exclusively filled by male officers.

This appointment goes beyond symbolic representation. It reflects a career marked by excellence within one of Bénin’s most rigorous and structured military institutions. The position demands unwavering discipline, constant vigilance, and a flawless command of close protection protocols. As the president’s aide de camp, she will now oversee his direct assistance, coordinate security arrangements at the Marina Palace, and manage his protection during official engagements across Bénin and abroad.

Her promotion sends a powerful message in support of gender equality within the defense and security sectors, an arena historically shaped by male dominance. Observers also draw a meaningful parallel with the legacy of the Agojie, the legendary warrior women of the Abomey kingdom, symbolizing a renewed recognition of women’s courage and leadership in the region.
