Benin strengthens emergency healthcare with 600 new oxygen concentrators

The healthcare landscape in Benin is undergoing a major transformation. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, took delivery of 600 advanced oxygen concentrators designed to improve emergency response capabilities in 23 medical facilities nationwide.

High-tech medical tools to protect lives

Acquired through UNICEF with the financial support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a total investment exceeding $205,450, or approximately 116 million CFA francs. These “10LPM single flow” concentrators are engineered to provide a continuous and essential flow of oxygen for patients experiencing respiratory distress.

This major distribution will prioritize 23 clinics and hospitals situated within the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

A strategic move against maternal and infant mortality

According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a vital component of a national strategy to decrease maternal, neonatal, and pediatric mortality rates.

“The availability of oxygen is of paramount importance,” the Minister stated during the ceremony. “These devices are a clear sign of our dedication to providing every citizen with fair access to premium healthcare services.”

Strong international collaboration

The official handover took place in the presence of H.E. Wei Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador, and Ousmane Niang, the UNICEF Resident Representative. The Ambassador praised the robust partnership between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local health sector.

The UNICEF representative further explained that these tools, made possible by the generosity of private donors in China, will significantly enhance the resilience of Benin’s health infrastructure during life-threatening emergencies.

This expansion of operational capacity across health structures reinforces the government’s persistent efforts to modernize the country’s technical facilities and provide more effective public health services.
