Preparations in full swing for Yaoundé’s 51st Francophonie parliamentary assembly
The countdown has begun for Cameroon as it prepares to host the 51st session of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF) in less than two weeks. The organising committee, led by Deputy Hilarion Etong, recently outlined the event’s key highlights during a press briefing, revealing that over 300 delegates—including parliamentary chamber heads and 80 youth representatives—are expected to attend.
The participants hail from all four APF regions: Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. Already, 275 registrations have been confirmed, with notable figures such as Amelia Lakrafi, APF General Delegate, and Louise Mouchoukiwabo, Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, among the attendees.
The committee, established in January 2026, comprises 17 specialised subcommittees drawn from both the Senate and National Assembly. Their efforts are focused on ensuring seamless logistical arrangements, including accommodations across eight hotels of varying standards.
This high-profile gathering will centre on two pivotal themes: ‘Multilateralism and State Sovereignty’ and ‘Francophone Parliaments’ Response to Climate Change in a Shifting Global Landscape’.
The first theme will spark discussions on rising protectionism and collective strategies to counter terrorism, irregular migration, and democratic instability within the Francophone sphere. The second theme empowers parliamentarians to advocate for climate action by translating international agreements into enforceable national legislation.
The agenda is packed with critical sessions, beginning with the APF bureau meeting on July 7, 2026, followed by youth and women parliamentarians’ network gatherings on July 8. That day also includes an excursion to the Nachtigal site for bureau members. On July 9, the four permanent APF commissions will convene ahead of the official opening on July 10. The assembly concludes on July 11 after intensive deliberations.
