Chad and Russia deepen ties in security and diplomacy

The relationship between Chad and Russia has taken a significant step forward in strengthening both military and diplomatic ties. Officials from both nations recently concluded discussions in Moscow, where they laid the groundwork for enhanced cooperation to bolster regional stability in the Sahara-Sahel zone.

During a joint press briefing on July 14, Chad’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul and his Russian counterpart Sergueï Lavrov announced a new visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic passports. This agreement marks a milestone in bilateral relations and reflects a shared commitment to deepening mutual trust and collaboration.

Minister Fadoul highlighted Chad’s growing interest in partnering with Russia on defense and security initiatives, emphasizing the urgent need to address rising security challenges across the Sahel. Both ministers underscored the importance of coordinated action in combating terrorism and extremist groups operating in the region.

Sergueï Lavrov used the press conference to address broader international issues, including Russia’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine, condemning what he described as provocative actions in the Black and Azov Seas. He also reaffirmed Russia’s dedication to strengthening ties with African nations, particularly in counterterrorism efforts.

Looking ahead, Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby is set to attend the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow this October, further signaling Chad’s active role in fostering stronger Pan-African and international partnerships.
