Following a series of deadly nocturnal attacks on a military outpost in Barka Tolorom, Chad’s air force launched immediate retaliatory strikes. On May 4th, armed groups linked to Boko Haram targeted the base, resulting in 25 fatalities—including two generals—and 46 injuries. “Chadian fighter jets targeted islands in Lake Chad under Boko Haram control, spanning areas near the borders of Nigeria, Niger, and Chad,” reported Africa Radio.
The offensive reportedly focused on Shuwa Island, described as a jihadist stronghold and a major fishing hub frequented by Nigerian fishermen. According to Africa Radio, the strikes may have claimed the lives of at least 40 Nigerian fishermen, with many presumed drowned in the bombings. Most victims hailed from Doron Baga, a Nigerian lakeside town previously devastated in 2015 when an attack left 2,000 dead.
Local fishing union representatives confirmed the disappearances, though Nigerian authorities have yet to issue an official statement. This incident follows recurring allegations of civilian casualties caused by aerial bombardments in the region, including recent incidents attributed to Nigeria’s military operations.
