Chelsea smashes Premier League transfer record with £138m deal

Chelsea Football Club has stunned the football world by securing midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £138 million. This historic transfer surpasses the previous Premier League record set just two weeks prior, when Manchester City acquired Elliot Anderson for approximately £135 million.

Aston Villa graduate becomes Chelsea’s record signing

Morgan Rogers, 23, joins the Blues on a long-term contract until 2033. His journey to Stamford Bridge has been anything but conventional. Having come through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion, Rogers joined Manchester City’s academy but never made a first-team appearance. Instead, he honed his skills through successive loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth, and Blackpool before establishing himself at Middlesbrough and, most recently, Aston Villa.

At Aston Villa, Rogers blossomed into a key player. Over 125 appearances, he contributed 31 goals and 29 assists, proving his versatility and attacking prowess. His performances caught the eye of Chelsea’s hierarchy, who moved swiftly to secure his services.

World Cup experience and fresh ambitions

Just months before his record-breaking move, Rogers showcased his talent on the world stage as part of England’s squad at the recent World Cup. The Three Lions finished third after a thrilling victory over France in the bronze medal playoff, following a narrow semi-final defeat to Argentina. Rogers featured prominently in both matches, demonstrating his ability to perform at the highest level.

For Chelsea, this signing marks a bold statement of intent. After a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season, the Blues are under new management with Xabi Alonso at the helm. The Spanish tactician is tasked with revitalising the squad and steering the club back into the upper echelons of English football. The arrival of Rogers, one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League, is a clear signal that Chelsea are serious about reclaiming their status as title contenders.
