Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms support for Sahara autonomy initiative

Sahara : la Côte d’Ivoire réaffirme son soutien au plan d'autonomie

During a regional seminar of the United Nations Committee of 24 (C24) held in Managua, Côte d’Ivoire once again voiced its firm backing for the autonomy initiative proposed by Maroc to resolve the Sahara dispute. This diplomatic stance underscores a growing international consensus around the proposal as a viable path forward.

The Ivoirian representatives emphasized the credibility of this framework, which has gained the approval of approximately 130 nations. They noted that the plan strictly adheres to the principles of international law and various UN resolutions, specifically highlighting its recognition in Resolution 2797, which the Security Council passed in 2025.

Emphasis on political and socio-economic progress

The delegation from Abidjan pointed out that this initiative empowers residents of the Southern provinces to take a leading role in managing their local governance and economic future. This active participation is evidenced by the regular conduct of democratic elections and the presence of locally elected representatives in international forums, ensuring the region’s voice is heard on the global stage.

Furthermore, Côte d’Ivoire commended the advancements in human rights within the region, citing the effective work of regional commissions and their transparent cooperation with United Nations mechanisms. However, the delegation also raised alarms regarding the humanitarian conditions in the Tindouf camps, reiterating the urgent need for a formal census of the populations residing there to ensure proper aid and protection.

In its concluding remarks, Côte d’Ivoire reaffirmed its dedication to a political settlement achieved exclusively under the guidance of the UN. The nation urged all involved parties to embrace a spirit of realism and compromise to reach a definitive and lasting resolution for the benefit of the entire continent.
