Euro deputy condemns anti-lgbtq+ crackdown in Senegal

French Member of the European Parliament Manon Aubry has raised the alarm over the escalating persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal. The prominent left-wing politician is demanding immediate action from France to protect those at risk and support victims of what she describes as a state-sanctioned crackdown on sexual minorities.

In a powerful statement shared across social media platforms, Aubry condemned the recent legal amendments in Senegal that criminalize same-sex relationships. Under the updated legislation, individuals convicted of homosexual acts now face imprisonment ranging from five to ten years, sparking widespread international concern.

French politician slams homophobic laws

“LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. The criminalization of same-sex relationships in Senegal is not only unjust but also a gross violation of fundamental freedoms,” stated Aubry. “I stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Senegal and call for the immediate repeal of these discriminatory laws.”

The French politician also addressed the case of a French national currently detained in Senegal on charges related to the new legislation. “My full support goes to the French citizen detained under these oppressive laws. France must take urgent diplomatic action to secure his release and ensure asylum for Senegalese LGBTQ+ individuals fleeing persecution,” she emphasized.

Europe’s response to anti-LGBTQ+ policies in Africa

This development has intensified debates within European institutions about the continent’s role in addressing human rights violations beyond its borders. Aubry’s intervention highlights the growing pressure on Western governments to adopt stronger stances against discriminatory policies in African nations, particularly those targeting sexual minorities.
