FIFA sanctions referee after controversial africa cup final

Following the African Football Confederation’s decision to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title due to incidents in the final against Morocco on January 19, another penalty has been handed down—this time by FIFA. The repercussions have extended beyond the tournament, targeting the match official who presided over the contentious game.

Jean-Jacques Ndala, the referee in charge of the final, has been overlooked for inclusion in this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Despite retaining the confidence of the African Football Confederation, as evidenced by his assignments in the African Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, the global football governing body has opted to exclude him from the prestigious event.

Why was the referee excluded from the World Cup?

The decision comes as no surprise to many, given the intense scrutiny surrounding Ndala’s performance during the final. Critics widely condemned his handling of key moments, particularly his inaction in the face of escalating tensions and questionable decisions that may have altered the match’s outcome.

According to Olivier Safari, Chair of the CAF Referees Committee, instructions were issued to Ndala during a halftime interruption. These directives reportedly instructed him not to issue yellow cards to Senegalese players re-entering the field, despite two of them already having prior cautions. The rationale? To “preserve the integrity of the match” upon their return to play.

How did other African referees fare at the World Cup?

In contrast, seven African referees were selected for the FIFA World Cup, all of whom officiated at the recent Africa Cup of Nations. The list includes Jalal Jayed from Morocco, Mustapha Ghorbal from Algeria, Pierre Atcho from Gabon, Dahane Beida from Mauritania, Tom Abongile from South Africa, Amin Mohamed from Egypt, and Omar Artan from Somalia.
