After decades of steady progress, Gabon’s Human Development Index (HDI) has taken a worrying turn since 2021. According to the National Report on Human Development (RNDH 2026), the country has shifted from consolidation to a genuine structural regression. After reaching an HDI of 0.704 in 2020, the index plummeted to 0.693 from 2021, relegating Gabon to the lower-middle-income category and highlighting the fragility of a development model long sustained by oil revenues but insufficiently diversified to withstand economic and health shocks.
