Ivorian opposition leader summoned for judicial questioning

In a significant legal development, Assalé Tiémoko Antoine, leader of the Ivorian political movement Aujourd’hui et Demain, la Côte d’Ivoire (Adci), has been summoned for questioning by the senior investigating judge at the Abidjan Court of First Instance. The summons, disclosed through an official statement from the Adci’s national executive bureau, marks a critical juncture in a judicial matter involving the opposition figure.

According to the communiqué signed by the party’s executive secretary, Roger Youan, the Ivorian Police Prefecture in Abidjan notified the legal representatives of Assalé Tiémoko Antoine on May 12, 2026, about the issuance of the summons. Upon learning of the situation, the opposition leader personally visited the police headquarters, where the document was officially handed to him, accompanied by a signed receipt.

Key details of the summons include:

  • The hearing is scheduled for Friday, May 15, 2026, at 8:00 AM before the senior investigating judge presiding over the 8th investigating chamber of the Abidjan Court of First Instance.
  • The summons follows an incident on the evening of May 11, 2026, when Assalé Tiémoko Antoine was reportedly prevented from boarding a flight to Canada, a move the Adci described as occurring “without any legal justification”.

The Adci’s statement urged its members and supporters to remain “calm, composed, and mobilized”, emphasizing the importance of continuing the movement’s expansion across Côte d’Ivoire and abroad. The party also revealed that even prior to receiving the summons, Assalé Tiémoko Antoine had formally requested clarifications from the Republic’s Prosecutor regarding his legal status.

This judicial episode unfolds against a backdrop of heightened political visibility for the Adci leader, who recently declared his candidacy for the 2028 municipal elections in the Cocody district. The development adds another layer of complexity to Côte d’Ivoire’s evolving political landscape, where legal challenges and electoral ambitions intersect.
