JNIM blockade disrupts Bamako: Amnesty International warns of severe civilian impact

Bamako, Mali’s bustling capital, has been under siege since April 30, 2026, when jihadist factions from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) initiated a complete lockdown of key access routes. This drastic measure follows coordinated assaults on April 25-26 that targeted strategic military installations, leaving the ruling junta vulnerable.

“Unacceptable consequences” for civilian life

In a scathing statement, Amnesty International condemned the blockade’s devastating effects on daily life. The organization highlighted how the siege “jeopardizes fundamental rights to food security, healthcare access, and personal safety”, emphasizing that civilian vehicles—including commercial trucks—have become prime targets. “International humanitarian law mandates clear distinction between combatants and non-combatants. These attacks violate that principle,” stated regional director Marceau Sivieude in the release.

The watchdog group documented a May 6 incident where jihadists ambushed a civilian convoy transporting fruits from Bamako to Bougouni. The trucks, “unarmed and carrying no military personnel or equipment,” were deliberately targeted. As a direct result, logistics companies have suspended all transport services to and from the capital, exacerbating shortages of essential goods.
