Khardiata Tandian remains jailed as Sonko signature forgery trial delayed again

The case of the alleged forged signature of Ousmane Sonko continues to drag on, with Khardiata Tandian still behind bars awaiting a verdict. The Dakar Criminal Court had initially scheduled a decision for July 9, 2026, but once again postponed the ruling to July 23.

This marks the second delay in the proceedings, as the tribunal seeks to secure the presence of another individual cited in the case. Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as Tandian’s alleged accomplice, remains absent and his appearance is deemed essential before the court can proceed.

During the latest hearing, Tandian’s defense team seized the opportunity to file a motion for her provisional release. The legal team argued that all procedural documents had already been submitted, making continued detention unnecessary. They also assured the court that no risk of witness tampering or evidence tampering existed, citing Tandian’s prior testimony and the completeness of the case file.

Lengthy detention and family concerns

The defense highlighted that Tandian, a married mother of one, has been incarcerated for over a year. They contended that this prolonged detention could effectively cover any potential sentence she might face, rendering further imprisonment unjustified. Additionally, they emphasized the worsening social and familial consequences of her continued confinement.

The court, however, sided with the prosecution, which opposed the release. The prosecutor argued that granting provisional freedom could disrupt public order and that Tandian did not provide sufficient guarantees to ensure her future court appearances. As a result, the request was denied, and Tandian remains in custody until the next hearing.

The trial hinges on the missing accomplice

The outcome of the case now rests on the presence of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy. His absence at previous sessions has already stalled the proceedings, and the tribunal is determined to hear from all parties involved before rendering a final decision. Unless further postponements occur, the court’s ruling is now scheduled for July 23, leaving Tandian in detention in the interim.
