“maman kamto”, dedicated mrc militant in Cameroon, passes away

Cameroon’s political landscape mourns the loss of a significant figure, “Maman Kamto”, a deeply committed activist for the opposition party, the Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC). She passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026, following a Cerebral Vascular Accident (AVC), her third such incident within a few months.

The Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC) finds itself grieving the loss of one of its most ardent supporters, known affectionately as “Maman Kamto.” Her passing on June 22, 2026, marks the end of a life dedicated to political activism, cut short by a third Cerebral Vascular Accident (AVC) in recent months.

“Maman Kamto” first gained widespread public recognition in 2025 during a pivotal demonstration outside the MRC’s headquarters in Grand Moulin, Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital. The incident occurred when Maurice Kamto, returning from a European tour, attempted to visit his party’s regional office in Douala but was unfortunately prevented from doing so by police forces.

Amidst the frustration and protests of militants gathered before the party’s Douala office, “Maman Kamto” stood out. Armed with a “tree of peace,” she bravely confronted the security forces, symbolizing peaceful resistance in the face of adversity. Her commitment to the cause extended beyond public demonstrations; she was also known for her regular visits to political prisoners who had been detained in the aftermath of the country’s post-electoral crisis. Her unwavering dedication to justice and the MRC’s ideals leaves a significant void in African politics.
