Mason greenwood transfer saga at om fuels debate over football negotiations

The transfer saga surrounding Mason Greenwood has once again taken a dramatic turn, casting a spotlight on the complexities of football negotiations. After appearing on the verge of joining AS Roma, the English winger has pivoted toward Fenerbahçe, leaving Italian football circles in a state of surprise.

Facing financial constraints and the need to reduce salary expenses, Olympique de Marseille (OM) has been actively seeking a solution to offload Greenwood. The potential move to Fenerbahçe stands in stark contrast to earlier expectations, where the player was poised to become Roma’s top target under manager Gian Piero Gasperini. This abrupt shift has sparked irritation among Italian football enthusiasts.

«negotiations like this rarely end well»

Italian football pundit Roberto Pruzzo expressed frustration over the unfolding situation. «Greenwood? Negotiations like this rarely end well. There’s uncertainty about whether the player genuinely wants to join Roma, and in the end, he ends up at Fenerbahçe. It’s rare to find a scenario where you think, ‘This is the player for me,’ only to sign him hours later,» he remarked during a broadcast, before his colleague Fernando Orsi added, «Football doesn’t hinge on Greenwood. He doesn’t strike me as a reliable figure, and with half the budget, Roma could find someone who aligns better with Gasperini’s vision. The World Cup serves as a showcase for players.»

fenerbahçe emerges as greenwood’s new destination

Meanwhile, Paolo Marcacci proposed an alternative route for Roma, suggesting, «Moreira is an exceptional player whose profile aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s philosophy. His stock has risen, especially after the World Cup, but we’ll have to see. This applies to Nusa, Garnacho, and others. Then there’s Tresoldi, who delivered an impressive season. Gasperini could refine Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary is beyond Italian clubs’ reach, and by pursuing him, Roma risks forfeiting Champions League participation.»
