Monaco’s dramatic collapse ends season with seventh place finish

Trailing 4-1 at halftime, AS Monaco suffered a dramatic 5-4 defeat to Strasbourg in the final matchday of the Ligue 1 season. The loss sealed a campaign that concluded with the club finishing in seventh position.

In their last outing, following a recent setback against Lille, manager Sébastien Pocognoli adjusted his tactics to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Denis Zakaria partnered Lamine Camara in midfield, while Ansu Fati operated as the attacking midfielder behind Folarin Balogun. Simon Adingra returned to the left flank. With just 250 traveling supporters in attendance, the opening exchanges reflected Pocognoli’s strategy: an aggressive high press and quick recoveries in Strasbourg’s half.

Lamine Camara struck early, intercepting a misplaced pass from El Mourabet and firing past the goalkeeper in the 10th minute. After Martial Godo pulled a goal back against the run of play (1-1, 34th minute), the Senegalese midfielder doubled his side’s tally with a low drive. Ansu Fati then added a third before halftime. Ten minutes after the break, a deflected strike from Folarin Balogun, ricocheting off Ismaël Doukouré’s own foot, made it 4-1.

What followed was nothing short of a collapse. Diego Moreira halved the deficit, Sébastian Nanasi equalized in the 72nd minute, and Godo restored Strasbourg’s lead with a curled effort under the bar ten minutes from time. Paris Brunner came close in stoppage time (87th minute), hitting the crossbar, but it was too late. Four goals conceded in thirty minutes, and a final match lost in painful fashion.

Pocognoli admits mental fragility after heartbreaking loss

« We started strongly and controlled the first half well. With a 4-1 lead, some may have assumed the game was over, but unfortunately, we conceded immediately after, which reignited everything », reflected Sébastien Pocognoli in the post-match press conference. He highlighted a recurring weakness: « This isn’t the first time this season we’ve collapsed when leading. Our mental resilience hasn’t always been up to standard. » He concluded: « We were missing several key ingredients to secure a victory we had in our grasp. Consistency was the missing piece. »

Season review: seventh place ends two years of European football

Ending the 2025-2026 campaign in seventh place, AS Monaco fell short of securing European qualification after two consecutive seasons in the Champions League. Pocognoli addressed the mixed campaign directly: « My job is to assess what went wrong. There’s clearly room for improvement and a need for reflection. When I arrived, I aimed to instill identity, unity, and clear principles. While these foundations remain intact, we must carry forward the positives into the next cycle. » With the transfer window approaching, the upcoming offseason will be pivotal in reshaping the club’s sporting vision.
