Monza secures Serie A promotion after dramatic two-legged play-off finale against Catanzaro

Monza clinched their Serie A return on Friday following a nerve-wracking Serie B play-off finale against Catanzaro. While the Lombardy-based side dominated the first leg with a 2-0 victory, their hopes nearly evaporated in the return match where they suffered an identical 2-0 defeat (2-2 aggregate score). However, their higher regular-season ranking ultimately secured their ticket to Italy’s top football division.
Monza has officially returned to Serie A. Just one year after their relegation, the Lombard club secured their promotion on Friday in a dramatic Serie B play-off finale against Catanzaro. After dominating the first leg with a 2-0 win, Monza’s players watched their advantage slip away during the home return match, which ended in a crushing 2-0 defeat. Goals from Fellipe Jack and Ruggero Frosinini reignited the suspense and tested Monza’s resolve in front of their own supporters.
Despite the perfect 2-2 aggregate tie, extra time was not part of the regulations. In cases of equal aggregate scores, promotion goes to the team with the higher regular-season ranking. As the third-placed team in Serie B, Monza was rewarded for their stronger season-long performance compared to Catanzaro, who finished fifth.
The Brianzoli secured their second Serie A promotion in four years, following their 2022 victory over Pisa. A major relief for a club that had briefly tasted European competition during their first stint in the top flight, only to face immediate relegation last season.
