Morocco edges out South Africa to reach Afcon Women’s semifinal

The Atlas Lionesses secured their spot in the semifinals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, avenging their 2022 final defeat. This outcome also marked a historic moment for South Africa, as it was the first time they were eliminated in the quarter-finals since Desiree Ellis took charge in 2016. Meanwhile, Morocco’s triumph guarantees their qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

A shaky defense turns the tide

Morocco had entered the match as the tournament’s only team yet to concede a goal. Yet, their unbeaten defensive record nearly crumbled early on. The first real chance came in the 14th minute when Thembi Kgatlana’s shot was turned away by Khadija Errmichi. However, it was Sakina Ouzraoui who broke the deadlock with a stunning volley after a cross from Hanane Ait El Haj (1-0, 32nd minute).

Morocco held a slender lead at halftime, but the second half saw their advantage grow. Fikile Magama’s dangerous challenge on Ghizlane Chebbak inside the box presented a golden opportunity, which Ait El Haj converted with composure (2-0, 50th minute). Though Magama redeemed herself with a goal (2-1, 67th minute), South Africa failed to capitalize further. The Atlas Lionesses held firm, securing their third consecutive semifinal berth in the competition.
