Chad independence day 2026: opposition leader urges national unity and calm

As Chad prepares to mark its 66th anniversary of independence on August 11, 2026, Pahimi Padacké Albert, leader of the Rassemblement national des démocrates tchadiens (RNDT-Le Réveil) and frontman of the opposition, has issued a heartfelt plea for unity, reconciliation, and calm.

In a solemn address to the nation, the former Prime Minister addressed his fellow citizens with profound humility and a keen sense of responsibility. He emphasized that this year’s celebration unfolds against a backdrop of simmering political tensions and deep-seated frustrations, shaped by widespread feelings of alienation.

« This year, we celebrate our hard-won freedom in a climate of quiet but heavy political tension, fueled by a sense of multidimensional exclusion, » Pahimi Padacké Albert stated, underscoring the urgency of collective reflection.

The opposition figure called for renewed dialogue and a spirit of openness. « Today, I renew my responsible call for unity, calm, open-mindedness, and heartfelt reconciliation, » he declared, urging all stakeholders to prioritize national cohesion.

His message also extended directly to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, urging decisive action to bridge divides. « As we stand on the threshold of this celebration, I solemnly call on all citizens, beginning with the Head of State, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno: Let bold decisions be taken to overcome exclusion and bring our people closer together in the unity of the Chadian family. Let the constitutional tools at the President’s disposal be used to restore freedom to political actors unjustly detained. Let a genuine political opening, rooted in sincere, fraternal, and patriotic dialogue, pave the way for this spirit of calm, while respecting the rich political, cultural, and religious diversity of our nation, » he emphasized.
