In a decisive move to restore order in the 7th arrondissement of N’Djaména, local authorities have initiated a sweeping operation to reclaim public thoroughfares, beginning Monday with a targeted cleanup along Avenue Taïwan.
The initiative, spearheaded by the district mayor’s office, aims to eliminate unauthorized encroachments that have severely disrupted traffic flow, compromised pedestrian safety, and degraded the urban landscape in this bustling part of the capital.
Crackdown on illegal encroachments and safety hazards
Under the direction of Mayor Adoum Hassan Djimet, the operation focuses on dismantling makeshift structures, removing illegally placed market stalls that spill onto the roadway, and addressing the persistent issue of stray livestock obstructing traffic.
Speaking to residents, the mayor emphasized the urgent need for action, citing a rise in traffic accidents directly linked to the chaotic occupation of public space. “Roads must breathe. I urge every resident of the 7th arrondissement to embrace this change as a collective responsibility. Lives are being lost daily because of these illegal obstructions,” he stated.
Firm measures to enforce compliance
In a stern warning to those defying the cleanup efforts, Mayor Djimet declared that authorities will not tolerate further violations. “Anyone found illegally occupying public roads will face arrest, and their goods will be confiscated. Stray animals will also be impounded,” he asserted.
The operation underscores the municipality’s commitment to restoring order, enhancing road safety, and fostering a more organized urban environment for all residents.
