Niamey celebrates third anniversary of Niger’s military-led transition

Thousands of Nigeriens took to the streets of Niamey this Saturday morning to mark the third anniversary of the country’s Refoundation, commemorating the military’s rise to power on July 26, 2023.

«This historic date symbolizes a turning point in our nation’s journey, as the people of Niger have unequivocally endorsed the actions of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP). Together, we have closed a dark chapter marked by thirteen years of governance that fractured national unity, suppressed dissent, and subjected our nation to foreign domination.»

Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a prominent figure in Niger’s civil society, emphasized the significance of the event. The spontaneous outpouring of support reflects a collective desire for change after years of political instability and external interference.

The festivities also served as an opportunity to highlight the milestones achieved under the new political dispensation. Citizens expressed pride in the strides made toward reclaiming Niger’s sovereignty.

«July 26 isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a symbol of liberation, a beacon of hope, and the foundation of a governance model unlike any we’ve seen in the past three decades.»

Abdoulaye Salifou, a demonstrator, shared his perspective on the nation’s progress. «Our country has made remarkable achievements, particularly in reclaiming its independence from Western imperialism and asserting its rightful place on the global stage. We urge the current leadership to stay the course and continue this transformative journey.»

Moussa Moumouni, another participant, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of persevering with the Refoundation’s ambitious agenda. While celebrating past successes, the crowd also turned its attention to the road ahead, calling for sustained reforms and the full realization of the movement’s goals.
