Over 1.3 million displaced burkinabè return home as security improves

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the government of Burkina Faso has confirmed the voluntary return of over 1.3 million internally displaced persons to their original communities as of June 30, 2026. This milestone follows a steady improvement in security conditions across several areas recaptured by national forces.

Progress in local recovery

Officials report that returnees have now resettled in 1,034 localities—an increase from 871 communities recorded at the close of 2025. At that time, the number of displaced individuals who had returned home stood at approximately 1.16 million.

Ministry’s mid-year performance

These figures were presented during a mid-year assessment of the Ministry of Solidarity’s operational outcomes. By the end of June 2026, the ministry had achieved 46.06% of its annual commitments, reflecting steady progress in humanitarian and resettlement efforts.

Support for vulnerable populations

In the first half of 2026, more than 480,000 people facing extreme hardship received critical assistance. This included food supplies, essential household items, and targeted support aimed at restoring stability and enabling long-term recovery.

Rehabilitation priorities

Government representatives have underscored the urgent need to restore damaged housing and basic infrastructure in affected areas. They emphasize that these efforts are vital not only to sustain the return of displaced families but also to ensure their successful reintegration into secure, functional living environments.
