After an impressive season in Belgium, Kjell Scherpen is set to make a high-profile move to the English Premier League. The 26-year-old goalkeeper, renowned for his shot-stopping ability, will leave Union Saint-Gilloise to join newly promoted Ipswich Town in a deal reportedly worth at least €10 million. The agreement includes potential performance-based bonuses that could push the total transfer fee up to €13 million.

From the Netherlands to Belgium and now England

Scherpen’s journey to Premier League prominence has been marked by persistence and adaptability. Signed by Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021 from Ajax for €5 million, the Dutchman saw limited first-team opportunities and was subsequently loaned to KV Ostende, Vitesse, and Sturm Graz. His breakthrough came in Belgium, where he signed for Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2025 for approximately €2 million, agreeing to a contract running until mid-2028.

During his lone season with Union Saint-Gilloise, Scherpen delivered standout performances, keeping 21 clean sheets in 43 appearances. His contributions were pivotal in securing both the Croky Cup and the Golden Glove award for the league’s top goalkeeper with the most clean sheets. These achievements drew attention from clubs across Europe, with interest confirmed from Italian, German, and English sides.

A competitive battle awaits at Ipswich Town

Upon completing a successful medical examination, Scherpen will officially join Ipswich Town on a four-year contract. The club has also bolstered its squad with midfielder Kayne van Oevelen, who arrives from FC Volendam. Both players will compete for starting positions alongside established goalkeeper Christian Walton, who was the first-choice keeper for Ipswich Town last season.
