Bénin’s ‘Les Démocrates’ Urge Peaceful Resolution in Niger Crisis
The political turmoil gripping Niger and the looming threat of ECOWAS military intervention have drawn sharp criticism from Bénin’s opposition party, Les Démocrates. In an official statement released on Saturday, August 5, 2023, party leader Eric Houndété condemned the military takeover in Niger, warning that such crises often attract opportunistic actors seeking to exploit instability for personal gain.
Les Démocrates firmly oppose any unconstitutional seizure of power, denouncing the alarming recurrence of coups in West Africa. According to Houndété, these crises stem from systemic governance failures, including political repression, economic exploitation, institutional corruption, and constitutional manipulation. The party stresses that ‘’the root causes lie in injustice, systemic marginalization, and the hijacking of democratic institutions by entrenched elites.’’
Diplomacy Over Force: A Call for Regional Unity
The opposition party urged ECOWAS member states to prioritize dialogue and conflict resolution, emphasizing the bloc’s shared values of peace and stability. Les Démocrates also called for robust measures to counter constitutional coups, poor governance, and exclusionary policies across the region. The statement raised critical questions about the ‘’legal foundations for declaring war on a fellow ECOWAS member’’ and the parliamentary oversight required before deploying troops.
Peace Through Dialogue: A Shared Responsibility
Highlighting concerns over the financial and human costs of military action, Houndété argued that ‘’the path of force is reckless and perilous.’’ Instead, he urged the Bénin government to champion negotiation, reconciliation, and diplomatic engagement as the cornerstone of regional stability. Les Démocrates reaffirmed their commitment to fostering national and cross-border dialogue, positioning peace and shared prosperity as essential goals for both Niger and Bénin.
