Niger launches inaugural defense attaché training program

Niger’s first-ever defense attaché training program marks a historic shift in the country’s military diplomacy, strengthening institutional capabilities and redefining defense partnerships.

This morning, General Salifou Mody, Niger’s Minister of State for National Defense, inaugurated the first-ever training session for defense attachés and military attachés at the École de Guerre. The program, spearheaded by the Ministry of National Defense in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represents a groundbreaking initiative in the country’s military diplomacy.

For decades, Niger’s defense attaché system operated without a structured preparation framework. This inaugural session breaks from that tradition by establishing a formal training pipeline to equip future military diplomats with the skills needed for their critical roles. The program aligns with President Abdourahamane Tiani’s vision of fostering balanced military partnerships while safeguarding national sovereignty.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Salifou Mody emphasized the program’s strategic importance: « Beyond institutional capacity building, this initiative reflects our commitment to elevating Niger’s military diplomacy. It ensures our attachés can navigate complex geopolitical landscapes while promoting our national interests. » The training addresses evolving security, diplomatic, and geopolitical realities that demand highly skilled defense representatives.

« Defense attachés are not merely diplomatic liaisons—they are guardians of national interests, » Mody stated. Their responsibilities span strategic intelligence, crisis management, cultural and economic diplomacy, and fostering military cooperation. Effective defense diplomacy requires not only military expertise but also deep diplomatic acumen, geopolitical awareness, and analytical rigor.

The Minister urged participants to embrace their roles as ambassadors of Niger’s values and strategic priorities. « You are preparing for a mission far beyond ordinary duty, » he noted. « Your work will shape Niger’s image abroad, forge trust with allies, and deliver insights that inform high-level decision-making. »

This historic training marks a major milestone in Niger’s military cooperation policy, setting a new standard for defense diplomacy in the region.
