Ousmane Sonko details his dismissal amid political tensions in Senegal

In a candid press briefing this Tuesday, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, laid bare the details surrounding his abrupt removal from office. The revelation shed light on weeks of speculation about the rift between Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, offering unprecedented clarity on the unfolding political drama in Dakar.

Sonko recounted how the President had summoned him to the Presidential Palace, where he was informed that their political partnership could no longer continue. According to Sonko’s account, the head of state cited multiple public statements as the primary reason for the decision. Rather than accept the dismissal passively, Sonko chose to confront the situation head-on.

“I made it easier for him,” Sonko declared. “I told him I would comply with his decision. When he asked if he wanted to dismiss me, I simply replied that he should take full responsibility and act accordingly.” His words underscored a refusal to shoulder the burden of a decision he did not make.

Earlier, Sonko had proposed an alternative arrangement to the President—stepping down from his ministerial role to lead the National Assembly, while pledging unwavering support for the administration’s agenda. However, this proposal was never acted upon, leaving the political landscape in flux.

With resolute conviction, Sonko emphasized his stance: “I could not accept responsibility for this separation.” The statement underscored the high stakes and personal stakes in this political confrontation, as Senegalese citizens and observers alike grapple with the implications of this leadership shake-up.
