Senegal: Ousmane Sonko elected president of the National Assembly
Ousmane Sonko secured the presidency of Senegal’s National Assembly on May 26, 2026, just four days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye removed him from the role of Prime Minister.

As leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, which holds the majority in the Assembly, Sonko received 132 votes out of the 133 cast. He takes over from El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned from the position last Sunday.

On Monday evening, President Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of monitoring and evaluating the National Transformation Program 2050, as well as Secretary-General of the government.
