Ousmane Sonko takes the lead of the National Assembly in Senegal

In a major shift within the political landscape of Sénégal, the former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has been appointed as the President of the National Assembly. This election took place just four days after he was removed from his position as head of the government by the Head of State.

The parliamentary session was marked by a significant boycott from opposition members, who chose to stay away from the proceedings. These political figures have publicly denounced the election, describing the move as a “constitutional coup.” This development occurs amidst a period of high tension between the executive and legislative branches of the country.

A climate of institutional transition

The rise of Ousmane Sonko to the presidency of the legislature follows a series of decisive actions by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Earlier, the President had dissolved the National Assembly, leading to the organization of new legislative elections on November 17. The political atmosphere has been further charged by discussions surrounding the potential repeal of amnesty laws and a push for greater accountability through widespread corruption investigations.

Ongoing anti-corruption efforts

As Sénégal navigates this new chapter, the government is also focused on addressing legal and ethical standards. Authorities have launched extensive probes into allegations of systemic corruption, which have already resulted in a former minister being placed in detention. These investigations remain a focal point of the current administration’s agenda as it seeks to redefine the relationship between the state and its citizens.

Political dynamics and future elections

The election of Ousmane Sonko is perceived as a strategic maneuver following the dissolution of the previous assembly. Despite rumors of friction between the President and his former Prime Minister, this new role positions Sonko at the heart of the legislative process. The country now looks toward the upcoming electoral deadlines and the continued implementation of institutional reforms designed to reshape the Sénégal governance model.
