Senegal’s Pastef leader details his vision for governance and party autonomy
During his 48-hour Pastef tour across the Diourbel region, Ousmane Sonko delivered a powerful message about the financial independence of his party. Speaking in Touba and Sadio, he revisited the origins of Pastef’s mission and shared his expectations regarding the current administration’s performance.
Pastef’s self-funded model under scrutiny
In Touba, Sonko addressed supporters to clarify how Pastef operates without relying on public funds. The leader highlighted the party’s success in selling membership cards, emphasizing its reliance on grassroots contributions rather than state resources.
« Pastef does not draw from the national treasury to fund its activities—that would be against our principles, » he asserted, underscoring his commitment to transparency and self-sufficiency. With a touch of wit, he revealed that all 13,000 membership cards dispatched earlier in the day were sold out before 4 PM, requiring an urgent reorder from Dakar.
He urged his followers to remain focused on the party’s goals, warning against unnecessary confrontations. « Avoid clashes and provocations. If peace prevails in Senegal, Pastef will dominate every election in this country—no vote will slip through our grasp, » he declared.
Revisiting political milestones and future challenges
In Sadio, Sonko took a more analytical stance, reflecting on the 2024 political transition. He emphasized his pivotal role in nominating Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the party’s candidate after his own disqualification, framing it as a strategic move to uphold Pastef’s political legitimacy.
While acknowledging public sentiment regarding the current government’s direction, he subtly distinguished between the party’s ideological stance and the executive’s actions, hinting at potential gaps in implementation.
2026 and 2029 elections: a critical path ahead
Sonko framed the upcoming 2026 and 2029 elections as decisive moments for Pastef’s long-term vision. With an estimated 80% of the political groundwork completed under his leadership, he positioned himself as the guardian of the movement’s core ideals, ensuring its continued influence in shaping Senegal’s future.
