Ousmane Sonko weighs in on 2029 presidential aspirations

Ousmane Sonko, the prominent leader of Pastef and current President of the National Assembly, maintains a cautious stance regarding a potential bid for the 2029 presidential election.
When pressed on whether he would be a candidate in 2029 regardless of circumstances, Sonko emphasized that it is far too early to discuss such a prospect. He noted, “I observe numerous discussions about Ousmane Sonko’s candidacy in 2029, and I prefer to wait for the opportune moment, as my political party will ultimately decide which candidate it wishes to endorse. We are simply not at that stage yet.”
Addressing questions about President Diomaye Faye’s potential candidacy in 2029, Sonko clarified that he does not concern himself with the President’s electoral plans. He stated, “I believe he has his own path to forge, and I have mine. I will not speculate further on a probable candidacy for the incumbent president.”
