Pastef party congress: Ousmane Sonko poised for leadership renewal

The Pastef party is advancing its preparations for the upcoming congress with the official launch of candidate registration for the party leadership.
In an official statement, the Haute Autorité de Régulation du Parti (HARP) announced that nominations will be accepted from May 15, 2026, at midnight until May 20, 2026, at noon.
The regulatory body added that candidacy declaration forms will be made available to all aspiring leaders seeking the party’s top position.
This process aligns with the broader preparations for the Pastef congress, anticipated as a pivotal moment in solidifying the party’s influence following its rise to power.
While the internal election outcome appears largely predictable, Ousmane Sonko, the party’s central figure and historical leader, is widely expected to be reaffirmed as its chairman during the congress.
This milestone comes at a time when Pastef is focused on strengthening its internal structure after securing political dominance and laying the groundwork for its future policy agenda.
