Despite his commendable performances in the PSG goal since stepping in for Lucas Chevalier, Matvey Safonov’s long-term position as the starting goalkeeper appears uncertain. Reports indicate that Luis Campos is actively working to finalize a significant transfer for FC Porto’s acclaimed shot-stopper, Diogo Costa.

Following PSG’s triumph in securing the French championship with a victory over RC Lens, Luis Campos had previously affirmed a pause in transfer discussions. “For us, regarding the transfer market, and this is a decision we made with our coach and the president, our transfer market has been completely halted for several weeks,” he stated. This strategy was clearly aimed at allowing the team to fully concentrate on the upcoming Champions League final scheduled for May 30 against Arsenal. However, this temporary freeze does not seem to prevent the Parisian club from meticulously planning its summer acquisitions.
PSG’s pursuit of Diogo Costa intensifies
Our findings reveal that PSG has set its sights on acquiring Diogo Costa, the goalkeeper for the newly crowned Portuguese champions, FC Porto. This potential move suggests a shift in confidence away from Matvey Safonov, despite his flawless displays since becoming PSG’s number one, and a decision not to reintegrate Lucas Chevalier, who joined for €40 million last summer, excluding bonuses. Diogo Costa extended his contract last December until 2030, but notably, his release clause was adjusted downwards. It now stands at €60 million.
A swift transfer before the world cup?
Such a revision to his release clause is often interpreted as a precursor to an impending departure. Further insights indicate that PSG has significantly accelerated negotiations in this matter, with a firm intention to finalize Diogo Costa’s transfer before the World Cup commences on June 11. The primary objective is to swiftly resolve the crucial goalkeeper situation. It is also noteworthy that Diogo Costa’s agent is none other than Jorge Mendes, a figure well-acquainted with Luis Campos. This established relationship could substantially streamline discussions for the transfer of the goalkeeper, who is expected to start for Portugal this summer.
