Senegal: Ousmane Sonko’s next moves after sweeping party re-election

The Pastef party is more united than ever behind its leader. Ousmane Sonko was overwhelmingly re-elected as party president during Saturday’s congress. Removed from the prime minister’s post two weeks ago by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the former head of government—now president of the National Assembly—used this gathering to further cement his role as a political opponent to the head of state. With a parliamentary majority, Pastef, Sonko declared, “will ensure the interests of the people are protected.” How do you see the relationship between Sonko and Diomaye evolving in the coming months? Your reactions matter to us.
