Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô, on Monday evening unveiled a new 30-member government cabinet, notably without representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite its majority presence in the National Assembly.
This executive reshuffle takes place amidst a period of national political realignment, characterized by the integration of numerous technocratic and political figures into the new team. Several hours before the official list was published, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had announced that members of his political formation would not be participating in this new government.
Outlining the new team’s strategic direction, the Senegalese Prime Minister emphasized that this cabinet represents a «government of mission and obligation of results», built upon both a political and technocratic foundation, while also ensuring significant representation for youth and women. This is a key development in African politics, reflecting a commitment to broad inclusion.
He further clarified that the government’s actions will be guided by a revamped methodology, focusing on institutional coherence and the mobilization of national expertise, including that of the Senegalese diaspora.
The new configuration sees the reappointment of several ministers from the previous administration. Among them are Cheikh Diba, who retains his portfolio at the Economy; Cheikh Niane, continuing as Minister of Foreign Affairs; Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, overseeing Hydraulics and Sanitation; and Moustapha Guirassy, who remains in charge of National Education. These appointments are crucial for the ongoing stability of the African economy within Senegal.
Similarly, other key officials maintaining their positions include Ibrahima Sy at Health, Moussa Bala Fofana for Urbanism, Yankhoba Diémé heading the Armed Forces, Déthié Fall for Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr for Communication. These roles are vital for the nation’s progress and reflect the continuity in key sectors of Senegalese governance.
This governmental restructuring follows President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô succeeds Ousmane Sonko, who has since been elected to the presidency of the Senegalese National Assembly, marking a significant shift in Senegal’s political landscape.
