Ousmane Sonko has been removed from his position as Prime Minister of Senegal. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has formally announced his dismissal.

The announcement was made on national television, confirming the end of a strained partnership between the two political figures.

With this decision, the entire cabinet—including ministers and state secretaries—has also been dissolved. The move follows growing public speculation about the deteriorating relationship between President Faye and former Prime Minister Sonko.

Ousmane Sonko responded to the news on social media, expressing relief. “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at Keur Gorgui,” he wrote.

The dismissal also triggers the dissolution of Senegal’s government. The presidency has confirmed that a new Prime Minister will be appointed, and a new government formed under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership.

The president’s election in 2024 was backed by Ousmane Sonko. After Sonko was barred from running, he endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who went on to win the election in a single round with over 54% of the vote.
