The Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, reaffirmed his commitment on Friday to tightening oversight of political funds to ensure their transparent use. His stance diverges sharply from that of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who has defended the status quo on this sensitive matter.
During a parliamentary session addressing urgent national issues, Sonko reiterated that his party, Pastef, has long advocated for stricter controls on how these funds are managed. He emphasized that the intention is not to abolish political funds altogether but to establish rigorous monitoring mechanisms to prevent misuse of public resources.
The Prime Minister made a firm declaration to lawmakers: « Public funds must never be spent without oversight. » He also disclosed that he personally oversees approximately 1.77 billion CFA francs in political funds allocated to his office, reinforcing his argument that the debate is not targeted against any individual but rather about ensuring accountability.
While acknowledging differences of opinion with the President, who has justified the continuation of these funds by citing critical expenses—such as national security, intelligence operations, and diplomatic commitments—Sonko pointed out that many Western nations already implement institutional controls over similar resources. He specifically highlighted France as an example, where special funds are monitored by a dedicated commission.
In a final remark, the Prime Minister revealed that he had discussed this issue with the Head of State following a parliamentary initiative led by Deputy Guy Marius Sagna. He expressed concern that parliamentary intervention could undermine the government’s political standing.
