Chad’s attendance at the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, has yielded significant progress. The nation has been officially added as the eleventh eligible country for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program under the United Nations Green Climate Fund—a program previously limited to ten participating countries.
This milestone underscores Chad’s commitment to addressing pressing urban challenges, including devastating floods, mass displacement, and the accelerating impacts of climate change on its cities and towns.
Strategic discussions pave the way for climate action funding
During the event, a high-level delegation from Chad, led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, engaged in productive talks with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The discussions centered on critical issues such as urban resilience strategies and potential areas for enhanced collaboration. Following these exchanges, a pilot project was greenlit for funding, with an estimated budget ranging between $900,000 and $1 million. This initial investment signals a strong likelihood of increased financial support from UN-Habitat in the coming months.
