The Minister of Mines, Fatimé Haram Acyl, recently highlighted the groundbreaking strides made by the SONEMIC (National Mining and Marketing Company) during the presentation of its annual report and strategic plan. Her enthusiasm was palpable as she praised the locally developed innovations that are reshaping the mining landscape in the Chad.
Local ingenuity driving transparency in Chad’s mining sector
One of the most striking innovations is a custom-built software solution engineered entirely by Chadian developers. This tool tracks mining permits and integrates seamlessly with customs and tax systems, offering an unprecedented level of transparency and efficiency. With over 147 active permits already recorded, this system is a game-changer for the sector, ensuring reliability and accountability in licensing processes.
Strategic mapping and global partnerships for economic growth
Beyond digital advancements, SONEMIC is spearheading a nationwide mapping initiative to accurately assess mineral deposits and preempt potential conflicts. These efforts align with the government’s broader vision to diversify the economy and reduce reliance on traditional sectors. Fatimé Haram Acyl also revealed ongoing negotiations with international partners, including discussions with the United Arab Emirates on water transformation projects and plans for an antimony refinery. These initiatives underscore a commitment to structural economic transformation.
Unified leadership for a sustainable mining future
Highlighting the importance of cohesive communication, the Minister emphasized that alignment and synergy are critical to unlocking the sector’s potential. She stressed the need for consistent messaging to reinforce shared goals, stating, “Effective communication is vital—we must highlight our achievements, align under a single vision, and pursue the President’s policies with unwavering unity.” This collaborative approach is seen as essential for positioning the mining and petroleum sectors as engines of job creation and sustainable development.
The annual report marks a pivotal moment for SONEMIC, with local innovations, resource mapping, and international partnerships paving the way for a transformative future. Concluding on an optimistic note, the Minister remarked, “There’s a role for everyone, and I believe Chad will emerge stronger from this collective effort.”
