Wakit Tama urges chadian people to rise against authoritarian drift

As the nation braces for the peaceful popular mobilization scheduled on May 16, 2026, the political wing of the Wakit Tama movement has held a press conference to denounce what it describes as the authoritarian slide under President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s regime.

Media under pressure, but standing strong

During the briefing, the movement paid tribute to Chadian journalists, hailing them as the last line of defense against oblivion and deception. In their view, the profession faces relentless harassment, intimidation, and repression, yet continues to uphold truth and transparency.

Legal system weaponized, activists say

The movement’s spokesperson, Abdelazim Mht Abakar, emphasized that the press conference aimed to spotlight the severe political crisis gripping Chad. He pointed to the recent sentencing of eight political figures from the GCAP coalition to eight years in prison—a decision Wakit Tama branded “outrageous” and accused the judiciary of becoming “a tool of the ruling power.”

Demands for immediate release of detainees

Wakit Tama reiterated its call for the unconditional release of all political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Succès Masra and other detained activists. The movement also criticized the silence of human rights organizations and international partners regarding alleged violations of fundamental freedoms in Chad.

“The Chadian people seek neither special treatment nor charity,” Abakar declared. “We demand justice, liberty, dignity, and respect for human rights.”

Mass mobilization set for May 16

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful action, Wakit Tama vowed that the people of Chad would “make their voices heard against injustice, fear, and the hijacking of freedoms.” The movement urged citizens to join the upcoming nationwide demonstration, positioning it as a pivotal moment for reclaiming democratic space.
