Who biennial report 2024-2025 Burkina Faso health breakthroughs

WHO biennial report 2024-2025 highlights Burkina Faso’s health resilience strides

The World Health Organization (WHO) biennial report for 2024-2025 in Burkina Faso outlines groundbreaking health achievements despite ongoing security, humanitarian, and climate challenges. These milestones reflect the country’s commitment to strengthening its health system and improving access to essential care for all citizens.

Among the most significant accomplishments is the nationwide rollout of the malaria vaccine across all 70 health districts, a critical step in reducing childhood morbidity and mortality from the disease. Additionally, the integration of the WHO Package of Essential Noncommunicable (PEN) disease interventions in six districts has enhanced early detection and management of chronic conditions at the primary care level.

A landmark regulatory achievement during this period was the implementation of a strict anti-tobacco decree, banning smoking in public spaces and public transport. This policy underscores the government’s dedication to reducing preventable health risks and promoting healthier environments.

The WHO-backed malaria control initiatives have delivered measurable results: over 5 million children received seasonal malaria chemoprevention, while nearly 15 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed across the country. In remote and conflict-affected areas, the WHO ensured uninterrupted health services through mobile clinics and advanced health posts, alongside the delivery of 58 tons of medicines and medical supplies to underserved communities.

Structural improvements in health data systems also featured prominently in the report, including the adoption of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in four referral hospitals. This upgrade enhances data accuracy, mortality surveillance, and evidence-based decision-making in public health.

These accomplishments highlight Burkina Faso’s progress in building a resilient health system, expanding service coverage, and safeguarding population health, while identifying strategic priorities for future programming.
