Willy Mengue, a leading voice in the opposition to Maurice Kamto’s return as president of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), is demanding that Equinoxe TV rebalance its coverage of the party’s internal affairs.
This call for balanced information follows the appearance of MRC vice-president Mamadou Mota on Sunday evening’s edition of ‘La vérité en face’.
According to Mengue, equitable news coverage, the pursuit of journalistic truth, and the public’s right to information make this rebalancing essential.
In an open letter to Equinoxe TV’s CEO, Mengue urged the station to either organize a direct debate between the two factions or grant a substantial right of reply on the program ‘La vérité en face’, which recently featured Mota discussing Kamto’s disputed return. ‘You gave the microphone to political ally Mamadou Mota on this pertinent issue. The quest for truth demands you offer the same service to us protesters, whom I represent,’ he wrote.
On Sunday, Mota defended Kamto’s return to the MRC presidency, a move Mengue formally contests, calling it a ‘fraudulent return’.
Mengue reminded the channel of its reputation as ‘the people’s channel that reports beyond the image’, stating that its coverage of the alleged tampering with MRC’s founding texts to facilitate Kamto’s return will only be fair if the requested right of reply is granted. ‘The Cameroonian people are watching you on this matter,’ he added.
