Algeria and Niger advance energy ties with Kafra South-East 1 drilling

The Prime Minister of Algeria, Sifi Ghrieb, led a high-level delegation to Niger on Thursday, joining his counterpart, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, to officiate the launch of exploratory drilling at the Kafra South-East 1 oil well. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in deepening the strategic partnership between Algiers and Niamey while expanding Sonatrach’s footprint in Niger’s energy sector.

Upon arrival at the Kafra oil field, located in northern Niger about 85 kilometers from the Algerian border, the Algerian Prime Minister was greeted by Nigerien officials, including government members and senior executives. The visit underscores a shared commitment by both nations to elevate bilateral relations from political alignment to tangible economic and energy cooperation.

The Kafra South-East 1 drilling project represents a concrete step in this direction, following closely behind the recent inauguration of the Niamey power plant. Sifi Ghrieb emphasized the project’s significance, calling it a “new milestone” in Algerian-Nigerien relations. “Just two months and ten days after the inauguration of the Niamey power plant, we are here today to lay another stone in the foundation of our strategic partnership,” he stated during the official ceremony.

This momentum stems from directives by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Nigerien leader General Abdourahamane Tiani, aimed at translating political will into actionable economic projects. The initiative aligns with the outcomes of the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien High Joint Commission, held in Niamey on March 23–24, 2026.

Exploring Kafra’s energy potential

The Kafra South-East 1 well is part of a broader exploration campaign to assess the oil potential of the Kafra field before advancing to potential development and production phases. For Sonatrach, the project carries strategic, industrial, and energy significance. The Algerian group is deploying multiple subsidiaries to execute the operation:

• Enafor (National Drilling Company) oversees human, technical, and logistical coordination;
• ENSP (National Well Services Company) handles specialized well services;
• ENG (National Geophysical Company) provides geophysical expertise.

Brahim Hammoudi, CEO of Enafor, highlighted the project’s dual purpose: consolidating Sonatrach’s presence in Niger while showcasing Algeria’s drilling expertise on the international stage. “This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainable cooperation in Niger,” he noted.

Building a lasting industrial partnership

Beyond drilling, a memorandum of understanding signed on June 2 between Enafor and Niger’s national oil company, Sonidep, outlines plans for a joint venture specializing in drilling services. This collaboration could pave the way for deeper industrial ties, including skills transfer, workforce training, and local capacity building. For Algeria, the partnership aims to expand Sonatrach’s operations in Niger while supporting the development of Niger’s oil industry. For Niamey, it offers access to decades of Algerian expertise in hydrocarbon exploration and production.

Under Sonatrach’s roadmap, Kafra South-East 1 is just the first of four planned exploration wells in northern Niger over the next two years. Early assessments indicate promising hydrocarbon potential, reinforcing the project’s strategic importance. Rabah Bouchak, Director of SIPEX Niger, confirmed that these operations will help determine the field’s development prospects.

Sonatrach’s strategic expansion in Africa

The Kafra initiative aligns with Sonatrach’s broader strategy to strengthen its African operations, building on existing projects in countries like Libya. Niger now emerges as a key growth market, with long-term plans spanning exploration, petroleum services, skills transfer, and industrial partnerships. The launch of Kafra South-East 1 signals Algeria’s intent to leverage its energy expertise while contributing to Niger’s oil sector growth.

The joint visit by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and the ceremonial drilling launch represent a pivotal shift in Algerian-Nigerien relations. Following the Niamey power plant’s inauguration, hydrocarbons have become the next major arena for cooperation. Far beyond a single well, Kafra South-East 1 embodies the shared vision of transforming political alignment into sustainable economic collaboration, with energy as a cornerstone of mutual development.
