Benin diplomat romuald wadagni visits Niger to ease tensions

The newly elected President of Benin Romuald Wadagni made a brief but significant visit to Niamey this past Tuesday, June 2, marking his first diplomatic engagement with Niger since the military takeover in Niamey in July 2023. This meeting signals a potential thaw in the previously frosty relations between the two neighboring countries, which have been strained by Niamey’s accusations that Cotonou is excessively aligned with Paris and allegedly attempting to destabilize Niger’s government.

Upon arrival, President Wadagni was formally welcomed by Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Following a prior stop in Nigeria, this visit underscored Benin’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation. Discussions with General Tiani centered on reviving security partnerships, as both nations grapple with persistent jihadist threats along their shared borders.

The Beninese leader departed Niamey in the early afternoon, en route to Ouagadougou, where further diplomatic engagements were planned. Official statements from Cotonou emphasized that this visit aligns with President Wadagni’s broader strategy of proactive neighborhood diplomacy, aimed at strengthening ties with neighboring states.

A thaw in relations was first observed during President Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou, where Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine attended, further signaling a willingness to mend diplomatic fences. Relations had reached a low point in late January when General Tiani publicly named President Wadagni’s predecessor, Patrice Talon, as alleged backers of jihadist attacks on Niamey’s airport—a claim vehemently denied by Benin. Meanwhile, Benin itself has faced escalating jihadist violence in its northern regions, bordering Niger, while Niamey has been suspected of involvement in a failed coup attempt in Cotonou in December 2023.
